The 2018 report released previous year had also shown that Uganda accounted for 4 per cent of the world's malaria cases, making it to the top five countries responsible for almost half of all malaria cases worldwide.

The report highlighted thatPlasmodium falciparum is the most prevalent malaria parasite in the WHO African Region, accounting for 99.7% of estimated malaria cases in 2018, as well as in the WHO South-East Asia Region (50%), the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (71%) and the WHO Western Pacific Region (65%).
According to the World Health Organization report, six African countries - Nigeria (25 per cent), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12 per cent), Uganda (5 per cent), and Côte d'Ivoire, Mozambique and Niger (4 per cent each) - accounted for more than half of all malaria cases worldwide.
The report also shows that globally, the malaria burden a year ago was the same as that in the previous one in all other countries, apart from Uganda and India, where there were reported reductions of 1.5 and 2.6 million malaria cases, respectively.

WHO's Strategic Advisory Group on Malaria Eradication has identified a renewed R&D agenda as one of the highest priorities in efforts to achieve the vision of the global strategy: a malaria-free world. He cited significant reductions in malaria cases and deaths since 2010, when case numbers fell from 239 million to 214 million in 2015, and deaths fell from 607,000 to around 500,000 in 2013. "Data is fundamental to all of our malaria projects, and we work closely with governments to build surveillance into their health systems".
