Jay-Z marks 50th birthday by adding his music on to Spotify

The rapper's streaming service, Tidal, will run a special video stream of all things Jay-Z, including interviews, performances, and music videos today as well.

The mogul marked his 50th by returning his entire back catalogue to Spotify at midnight.

"Happy birthday, Hov Welcome back to Spotify", Spotify tweeted in a picture collage, with a link to his songs.

It means that the platform experiences Jay-Z's critically acclaimed 2017 album 4:44 for the very first time. Hard Knock Life, along with his 2004 album with Linkin Park, Collision Course, he has since re-uploaded seminal records like American Gangster, Watch The Throne and The Black Album for fans to enjoy. He previously removed most of his catalogue when he launched Tidal, with the exception of his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt, 1997's In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2... Although they haven't reported subscriber numbers since 2016 when they had 3 million listeners, by comparison Spotify reported 113 million subscribers back in October.

Reps for Jay and Spotify did not immediately respond to Variety's requests for comment, but a source close to the situation said the two camps had been in discussions for some time; presumably the birthday simply provided a good news hook.
