Aston Villa team news: Smith without two first-choice men for Chelsea trip

Abraham, who played for Villa last season on loan, headed home from close range in the 24th minute after a lofted cross by right back Reece James, another of Chelsea's home-grown players who have flourished under coach Frank Lampard.

Amongst their list of targets include Valencia's Jose Gaya, who impressed against the club in this season's Champions League group stage, and Nice utility Youcef Atal who has shone in a variety of positions for the French side this season.

Aston Villa's Trezeguet scores their first goal.

"I don't think Mason should be mentioned exclusively on goals".

"Of course when a player's on such a good run and they come out of the team it's normal that you can miss them".

"It was the team I wanted to see".

"The West Ham game was a lesson for us and today we were back to what we are".

Abraham's strike should have been the signal for Chelsea to go for the kill, but instead the creaky defence that has been their Achilles heel at times under Lampard was breached in the 41st minute.

Despite nearly losing his footing, the Egypt midfielder got his head to the ball, diverting it onto his foot and past Kepa Arrizabalaga at the near post.

Into the second half, Chelsea regained the lead in style after just three minutes when Abraham chested a cross by Willian invitingly for Mason Mount to volley home and make it 2-1, the result that Chelsea managed to hold on till the end of the game.

Abraham, on his return from injury, scored a goal and registered a clever assist to set-up Mount to net the victor.
