Former Notre Dame Player George Atkinson III Dead At 27

The former National Football League player, who played for the Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns and was the son of Super Bowl champion George Atkinson II, died at the age of 27, according to People on Tuesday (December 3).

A cause of death for Atkinson - who was most recently cut by the New York Jets in 2018 - has not been released.

Atkinson " s death comes less than a year after his twin brother, Josh, died by suicide. Titled "How I Turned My Losses Into Lessons" and published by The Unsealed, the letter recounts the loss of their mother, who died from complications from Crohn's disease and also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, and how the tragedy weighed heavily on Josh. Sons of Super Bowl champion George Atkinson II, the brothers both played for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish starting in 2011.

Atkinson III's twin brother, Josh died just over a year ago and George was dealing with depression since his brother's death.

George said his brother felt guilty over their mom's death.

"Like you, I am still struggling", Atkinson wrote.

Atkinson left for the National Football League after his junior year, where he'd spend time with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs. "Without my daughter, I don't know where I would be right now".

"In the past year, the Atkinson family have lost both Josh and George Atkinson", Notre Dame Recruiting tweeted.
