Microsoft is killing off Cortana for some users

Remember Cortana? The digital assistant that Microsoft integrated into the company's Windows 10 operating system? It could be possible that Cortana will work in other regions including the United States after 31st January.

Reports started to appear in early 2019 that Microsoft planned to change how Cortana was used fundamentally.

Microsoft adds: "After January 31st, 2020, the Cortana mobile app on your phone will no longer be supported and there will be an updated version of Microsoft Launcher with Cortana removed".

The news that Cortana is departing from Android and iOS is a setback for those who were trying to adopt the Microsoft ecosystem.

Cortana's mobile apps will officially go away on January 31st, 2020.

As the post clarifies, the content you've created within the app will continue to be accessible through Cortana on Windows, but in the app itself or the Microsoft Launcher.

In a support document, Microsoft says that the Cortana app in Android and iOS devices won't be functional after January 31, 2020 in certain regions. Also, Cortana reminders, lists, and tasks are automatically synced to the Microsoft To Do app, which you can download to your phone for free. However, users can access the content in the Windows app of Cortana. In fact, it seems like the Cortana app will continue to exist for those in the U.S. - for now, anyway.

The retiring of the mobile Cortana applications and the removal of Cortana from Microsoft Launcher looks like an admission of defeat.

What are your thoughts on Microsoft's decision to remove Cortana from Android and iOS? Lately, the apps were only really useful for controlling Cortana devices like Surface Headphones.
