Albion College Student Killed By Train

Late Saturday night, Zachary Winston, brother of Michigan State guard Cassius Winston, was hit and killed by an Amtrak train in Albion, Michigan, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The Albion Department of Public Safety later reported that "at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a 19-year-old Albion College student intentionally walked in front of a westbound Amtrak train, tragically ending his life". Per the report, the Wolverine Train 355 bound for Chicago struck a pedestrian on the tracks near Erie Street in Albion.

The Albion Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Zachary Winston was one of Cassius' two brothers on the Albion College basketball team. "Zach was a finance major, a student in the Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management, and member of the Albion College men's basketball team".

Albion College president Mauri A. Ditzler released a statement Sunday, but did not mention Winston's name.

"He was an extremely charismatic young man with an infectious smile". Train traffic was delayed for around 3 hours while authorities investigated the incident. Zach was a recognized leader who was well known across every facet of our campus.

Ditzler said they plan to offer grief counseling and will be sharing details later Sunday. "He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed".

Michigan State faced Albion in an October 29 exhibition game in which both Cassius and Khy Winston played. "Their pain over the sudden loss of Zachary is unimaginable", Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. And as families do in hard times, we must come together to mourn and to embrace one another.

Michigan State is scheduled to play against Binghamton at home on Sunday at 7 p.m.

"It's impossible to find the right words in this moment, other than to say that will support the family in whatever way they need". The Britons played No. 1 MSU in an exhibition game on October 29, a game Izzo set up to get all three of them on the court together one time, but Zachary did not play due to his injury.
