By S&P 500 sector, communications services (+1.3%), financials (+1.2%), information technology (+1.1%) and energy (+1.1%) lead the market, while the typically defensive utilities (-1.6%) and real estate (-1.2%) sectors drop.

The S&P 500 rose 8 points, or 0.3%, to 3,085.

Shares of Qualcomm rose 6.32 percent, after the US semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company reported third-quarter earnings that topped analysts' estimates, as boosted by its licensing operation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 182 points, or 0.7%, to 27,674. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 23.89 points, or 0.28 percent, to 8,434.52.

Chipmaker Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) gained 7% after its earnings came in better than expected, while Ralph Lauren (NYSE:RL) surged 11% after topping forecasts due to stronger demand for its products in China and Europe.

China said on Thursday that it had agreed with the United States to remove tariffs in phases, while the state-owned Xinhua News Agency said Beijing was also considering removing restrictions on poultry imports.

Stocks are opening broadly higher on Wall Street as traders applauded signs of progress in scaling back the trade tensions between China and the U.S.

Elsewhere, Expedia (NASDAQ:EXPE) plunged 19% after reporting gross bookings came in shy of forecasts, while Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) stock tumbled 16.7% despite beating on the top and bottom lines, as losses were higher compared to the year earlier and it spent more on acquiring new users. -China trade relations and a fresh batch of largely upbeat earnings reports.

The Russell 2000 is up 4.66 points, or 0.3%.
