Salvini has previously made sceptical comments about the climate crisis and earlier this year said that global warming was not evident in Italy given the country experienced a cold May.

Climate change will soon become a compulsory course in all the schools of Italy, making it the first country to take such a move, according to new legislation announced by the Education Ministry.

In an interview in his Rome office on Monday, Fioramonti said all state schools would dedicate 33 hours per year, nearly one hour per school week, to climate change issues from the start of the next academic year in September.

"I want to make the Italian instruction method the first education and learning program that places the ecosystem and culture at the main of every thing we find out in faculty", he mentioned.

CNN reported that the lessons on climate change and sustainability will be folded into existing civics classes, which will have an "environmentalist footprint" beginning in the new school year.

Even so, many Italians are concerned that Five Star's emphasis on environmental problems, or perhaps, his failure to achieve such goals competently, is destroying the country's economy.

In addition, sustainable development will look in more conventional topics, this kind of as geography, maths and physics, Cramarossa explained.

A member of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S), Fioramonti is the government's most vocal supporter of green policies and was criticised by the right-wing opposition in September for encouraging students to skip school and take part in climate protests.

"The whole service is being changed to make maintainability and atmosphere the focal point of the training model", Fioramonti told Reuters in the meeting directed in familiar English.

Cramarossa said a panel of scientific experts, including Jeffrey D. Sachs, director of Columbia University's Center for Sustainable Development, and American economic and social theorist Jeremy Rifkin, will help the ministry redevelop the national curriculum to pay more attention to climate change and sustainability. "Forget that", Fioramonti said.

Fioramonti said the new government, which has got off to a shaky start with weeks of bickering over the budget, "will only last if it is courageous", and stops letting Salvini set the news agenda.

This makes the European country the first in the world to adopt the framework.
