Erdogan said that the security services seized the wife of al-Baghdadi

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that the Turkish security forces have detained the wife of the recently killed Daesh leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, his sister and brother-in-law.

Erdogan's communications director, Fahrettin Altun, said Tuesday that capturing al-Baghdadi's sister was "another example of the success of Turkey's counterterrorism operation". "At the same time we captured his sister and brother in law in Syria", Erdogan said during a speech at Ankara University.

Last month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said two of Baghdadi's wives had also been killed at the site of last month's raid.

Islamic State spokesman Abu Hassan al-Muhajir, considered a potential successor to Baghdadi, was himself killed in northwestern Syria in a separate attack by USA forces, a senior State Department official confirmed to Fox News last week. He died during a USA raid in October in Barisha, in the north-western Syrian province of Idlib.

Erdogan and Turkish officials revealed Wednesday that Turkish police detained one of al-Baghdadi's wives and a daughter a year ago. The terrorist group confirmed his death in an audiotape posted online later.

Erdogan said that the suspects were being kept in detention centers in Turkey while the Turkish Justice Ministry would decide how to handle their cases.

Ex-wife Saja al-Dulaimi, an Iraqi national, also left him in 2009 while pregnant. At one point, Baghdadi was also believed to be married to a German teenager, but she was reported to have fled his house in 2016.

The Turkish leader's comments were his second effort in as many days to publicize his country's push to catch IS members who were close to al-Baghdadi.

"The United States said Baghdadi killed himself in a tunnel".

Until his death, al-Baghdadi had moved from place to place in eastern Syria amid a tightening USA -led campaign against his group as IS-held territory fell bit by bit. He ended up in Idlib, in northwestern Syria, an area controlled by a rival, al-Qaida-linked militant group. It was not immediately clear if her capture produced intelligence that led to the capture of the unidentified wife.
