Cambodia's opposition leader not returning
CAMBODIAN opposition figure Sam Rainsy has landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport after he was barred from boarding a Thai Airways flight to Bangkok in Paris, Reuters reports.
"We express our expectation that Prime Minister Hun Sen and the government apparatus will act in conformity with the Cambodian Constitution and accept worldwide civilised norms and allow Sam Rainsy to meet with supporters of the now-banned CNRP unhindered and without harassment from the authorities or their agents", the statement said.
Yusmadi, who is also the founder of the regionally active Rights Foundation, appealed for Malaysia to allow Rainsy, a former Cambodian Finance Minister to continue on his proposed journey to his home country. The Thai government, however, has indicated it is unlikely to let Rainsy even into Thailand on "national security" concerns.
Security on Saturday was heightened.

Hun Sen and his ruling Cambodian People's Party have a stranglehold on power, which was ensured when Cambodia's high court dissolved the Cambodia National Rescue Party in late 2017 for allegedly treasonous activities.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation spokesperson Koy Kuong said on Friday that Cambodia had made it clear many times that Rainsy is a convict who meant to topple the legitimate government on his return. With the elimination of the Cambodia National Rescue Party, Hun Sen's party swept the 2018 polls.
Instead, Sam Rainsy arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday, where he told reporters he would be in that country for a few days. She had been detained at the airport on Thursday evening before being released on Friday. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Kem Sokha. Malaysia and Cambodia are both members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which maintains a policy of noninterference in each other's affairs.
It is unclear how he will get back to the country and for now he plans to meet with Malaysian MPs this week.
"More countries in ASEAN need to emulate Malaysia going forward if the bloc is ever going to shake the moniker of being primarily a dictator's club".

However, it described Mr Rainsy as "convict Sam Rainsy" and said it would take action against anyone posing a threat to state security, an accusation it has already laid against him. He claimed the airline had received orders from the Thai government not to allow him onto the plane, while the company claims he did not hold a valid ticket.
Because of the crackdown on Cambodia's opposition, the European Union has begun a process to reconsider trade preferences granted under an "Everything But Arms" (EBA) trade programme for least-developed countries. The government had expected opposition supporters to attempt to disrupt the event. Malaysia was, therefore, looking for a third country to which it could relocate the opposition members, he said.
Speaking to VOA Saturday afternoon by phone from Thailand, Pon Saory, general secretary of the CNRP overseas section, who is in close contact with Rainsy, said it was unlikely Rainsy would make it back to Cambodia that day. "It's unpredictable and anything can happen".
"There will be no dialogue with the rebels, who are led by Sam Rainsy", he said.
"We are going to work out a new strategy and explore all the possible option to go [to Cambodia] together", he said.

In Friday's statement, the U.S. State Department said it is "consistent in our support for the respect of fundamental freedoms and human rights and the reopening of political and civic space in Cambodia".
Mr Rainsy also vowed to return home in 2015 despite threats to arrest him, but did not.
Cambodia has freed opposition leader Kem Sokha from house arrest more than two years after he was arrested and charged with treason, but he remains banned from politics and from leaving the country.
