Bloomberg Launches a Bold, Unique Strategy for Clenching the Democratic Nomination

The billionaire media mogul, who has not formally confirmed his candidacy, submitted on Friday the documents to meet Alabama's filing deadline.

"I don't think you can just hopscotch around the calendar to suit your own political purposes", Democratic strategist Bill Carrick said. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), if he officially joined the race.

Democrats, however, don't see how his strategy can be successful.

Pro-Trump groups have already raised more than $300 million U.S. in 2019 as they prepare for the 2020 election fight. The New Yorker certainly has greater name recognition than the billionaire who's already running for the Democratic nomination - hello, Tom Steyer - but it's not unreasonable to be skeptical of Bloomberg's chances. Still, I would have to build a multi-state organization on the go.

If the DNC primary did not feature a stark contrast of ideology, between the more moderate Biden campaign and the progressive Sanders and Warren campaigns, Bloomberg would have most likely sat out of the 2020 primary.

During his mayoral office, Bloomberg supported New York Police Department's use of the controversial stop-and-frisk policy that critics said targets African Americans and Hispanics. And black voters are crucial for the Democrats.

"We have enormous respect for the Democratic primary process and many friends in those states", Wolfson said in a statement. In fact, that deadline is today, which is why, as the New York Times' report put it, Bloomberg is "expected to file paperwork this week designating himself as a candidate in at least one state".
