Michigan State is ranked No. 1 in the preseason Associated Press college basketball poll, which was released on Monday afternoon.

The No. 1 ranking isn't all that familiar for a program with the history of success MSU has.

The preseason AP Top 25 was released on Monday afternoon and Michigan State picked up 60 of the 65 first-place votes.

The top four teams will all be included in the annual Champions Classic, which will be held at Madison Square Garden on the opening night of the season, November 5. No. 2 game in the first week of the season. It will mark the third time in the last seven years that the Spartans have played in a No. 1 vs. Sparty returns many of its pieces from the 2019 Final Four team, led by CBS Sports Preseason All-American and Player of the Year Cassius Winston.

Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans stay making program history. They'll also be getting back Winston's classmate and National Basketball Association prospect Joshua Langford, who missed most of last season with a foot injury.

Four consecutive weeks is the longest an MSU team has held the No. 1 spot.

After playing Kentucky, the Spartans will also face No. 4 Duke and No. 12 Seton Hall during its non-conference schedule and potentially No. 3 Kansas at the Maui Invitational.
