The prime minister talked up New Zealand's track record on climate change action.

In Brisbane, a man has suspended himself underneath the city's Story Bridge as part of protests, with emergency services trying to reach him to safely get him down.

The activists said they would "stay here as long as it takes. three or four days". Extinction Rebellion said several protesters were arrested in the Victorian capital.

The protests are expected to continue today around the nation.

On Tuesday, a Vancouver police spokesperson said the force had opted to deal with protesters in a different fashion than in other cities holding similar protests. "But this is a public health emergency, and they aren't acting as fast as they should".

Some activists camped at Melbourne's Carlton Gardens overnight before marching to a street corner locked down by more than 100 protesters in inclement weather.

In Sydney, police are arriving at Hyde Park where protesters camped out overnight.

The group Extinction Rebellion staged the protest Monday at the foot of Broadway.

Former WA Greens senator Scott Ludlam was arrested at an Extinction Rebellion event in Sydney on Monday.

"I'm here taking the day off of work and I'm doing an uncomfortable thing to block traffic, which is not in my nature, because if we continue with business as usual, we are going to continue to miss the climate goals that we have".

Those protesting join activists across the world, including thousands in major European cities.

Back in April, members of the group blocked several London roads and bridges during 10 days of action created to alert the public and politicians to the "climate emergency".

New York City police officers surrounded the group and began making arrests after the protesters blocked tourists.

Extinction Rebellion have said that the protests will be five times bigger than the demonstrations in April which brought parts of London to a standstill.

It is part of an "international rebellion" around the world, with action taking place in cities including Berlin, Madrid, Amsterdam and NY.
