A Florida grandmother is demanding answers after her six-year-old granddaughter was reportedly arrested Thursday, WKMG reports.

Police say an internal investigation into the incident is ongoing. "And he says, 'Well, I have sleep apnea and I don't behave like that'". Kaia was handcuffed and put her in the backseat of a squad vehicle, her grandmother said.

A six-year-old was allegedly arrested at her school and taken to a juvenile detention centre in handcuffs where she had her fingerprints taken and a mugshot taken.

Cops said an 8-year-old was also arrested Thursday.

He said that officers are required to seek approval from their watch commander before arresting a child under the age of 12 years old.

"What do you mean she was arrested, he said 'there was an incident and she kicked somebody and she is being charged and she is on her way, '" Kirkland told the outlet.

School Resource Officer Dennis Turner (pictured above), was assigned to work at the Lucious & Emma Nixon Academy, in Orlando, Florida.

"I felt sad that my grandma was sad, and I really missed her", Kaia said.

Police chief Chief Orlando Rolon said: 'The Orlando Police Department has a policy that addresses the arrest of a minor and our initial finding shows the policy was not followed.

"As a grandparent of three children less than 11 years old, this is very concerning to me".

Rolle was taken to a juvenile center on a battery charge.

'Our Department strives to deliver professional and courteous service.

The OPD said that the transporting officer determined approval was not obtained for the child's arrest and processing was stopped "immediately".

The girl suffers from sleep apnea, a condition she is working on managing through medication, and was acting out from sleep deprivation, the grandmother said - and never should have been hauled off from her Orlando elementary school in handcuffs. "My staff and I are committed to exceeding those standards and expectations".

News 6 has requested a copy of Turner's personnel file and more about his employment history.
