The "Pose" star became the first openly gay person of color to win an Emmy award for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Pray Tell in the acclaimed FX show. Kerry Washington introduced Porter, tipping off the audience whose name was in the envelope when she said, "Once again we see history unfold" before announcing Porter as the victor.

"The category is love y'all", proclaimed Porter when he took the stage to accept his award.

He then quoted the incomparable James Baldwin saying "It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I'd been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here".

Porter's win puts him on the road to EGOT glory. "I'm so overwhelmed and so overjoyed to have lived long enough to see this day", he said.

He ended by passionately saying, "We as the artists are the people that can change the molecular structure of the hearts and minds of the people who live on this planet. Please don't ever stop telling the truth!"

In 2014, Porter won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for Kinky Boots.
