A federal judge has sided with the Trump campaign's request to halt a California law that's aimed at forcing the president to release his tax returns.

Also on September 9, the president filed a court document via his lawyer, arguing that federal judges should deny a motion issued August 29 by New York State officials to dismiss Trump's lawsuit trying to challenge the state's recently enacted law that allows Congress to request his tax returns.

Vance's office had issued a subpoena last month to accounting firm Mazars.

Vance is probing whether executives at the Trump Organization filed false business records relating to the payments to silence adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who claimed to have had sexual relationships with Trump, a person familiar with the matter said.

The case is Donald J. Trump v Cyrus R. Vance Jr., 19-cv-8694, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Manhattan.

"Virtually "all legal commenters agree" that a sitting President of the United States is not "subject to the criminal process" while he is in office", Trump's attorneys assert in the complaint, referencing multiple legal reports.

A spokesman for Vance said the district attorney had received the lawsuit "and will respond as appropriate in court".

Days later, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law, titled the TRUST Act, which would allow lawmakers on Capitol Hill to obtain Trump's state tax returns. They said the subpoena was unconstitutional and a "bad faith effort to harass the President by obtaining and exposing his confidential financial information".

The law was seen as a swipe against Trump, who has resisted releasing his tax returns.

"We are encouraged that the federal court tentatively concluded that a preliminary injunction should be granted", he said in a statement. Mr Trump's accounting firm declined to comment.
