US service member killed in Afghanistan

A US service member was killed in action in Afghanistan on Monday, the first American combat death since President Donald Trump made a decision to call off peace talks with the Taliban earlier this month.

Last week, the president declared that peace talks between the USA and the Taliban were officially dead, after calling off a secret meeting with its leaders at Camp David.

The American military death came almost a week after U.S. President Donald Trump canceled peace talks with the terrorist organization.

For months, the USA had been negotiating a peace deal that would potentially bring an end to the 18-year war in Afghanistan, the longest war in American history.

The death earlier this month of Army Sgt. 1st Class Elis A. Barreto Ortiz, 34, and 11 other people in a roadside bombing in the Afghan capital was one reason Trump cited for calling off secret scheduled talks with Afghan and Taliban officials in Maryland's Camp David, the president said on Twitter days after the attack.

But since declaring last week that the peace talks were a casualty of the Taliban's attempt to strengthen its own negotiating position, Trump repeatedly boasted that the USA has been hitting the insurgents "harder than at any time in the last 10 years".

Afghan security forces, backed by US air strikes, killed two of the Taliban's shadow provincial governors on Sunday, as fighting stepped up in the aftermath of the collapse of talks.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan's main power utility said that households and businesses in about a third of the country have been hit by blackouts after electricity pylons in the northern province of Baghlan were blown up over the weekend.

The Taliban group is reportedly hopeful that peace negotiations with the United States will resume soon. We think the very peaceful way to resolve the Afghan issue is to implement the agreement between us and USA.

The Taliban intensified attacks amid the peace negotiations, refusing to agree to a ceasefire with the administration of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.

The Taliban, who now control the most territory they have had since 2001, are demanding the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Afghanistan.

The Taliban and other terrorists have also maimed 20,543 American service members.

Despite the failed talks, the president may decide to withdraw some forces without a peace deal, bringing the total number of US troops in Afghanistan down from approximately 14,000 to 8,600, according to USA officials.
