Iran rejects any chance of Rouhani-Trump meeting as UNGA looms

Iran said on Monday a meeting between Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his USA counterpart Donald Trump at the United Nations this month "is not on the agenda", after the White House on Sunday left open the possibility of a potential meeting.

Neither is such a plan on our agenda nor will such a thing happen, ' Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said Monday.

Mousavi also said Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is under United States sanction, will accompany President Hassan Rouhani on his upcoming visit to NY if the necessary grounds are provided. It's good for the country, good for them, good for us, and good for the world.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said on Sunday the previous day's attacks "did not help" prospects for a meeting between the two leaders during the United Nations General Assembly this month, but she left open the possibility a meeting could take place.

Tensions between the two countries have soared since Trump unilaterally withdrew the USA from the JCPOA in May past year and began reimposing crippling sanctions on the Islamic republic.

European powers led by French President Emmanuel Macron have been trying to salvage the nuclear accord defuse the crisis, with Macron proposing a meeting between Rouhani and Trump.

But that's exactly what he's vowed, word-for-word, on camera in recent weeks.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at a press conference on Tuesday (above) said Trump was willing to meet with Rohani "with no preconditions, ' the same day the president asked Bolton to hand in his resignation".

Trump tweeted Sunday: The Fake News is saying that I am willing to meet with Iran, "No Conditions". "Now, the President has made clear he is happy to take a meeting with no pre-conditions, but we are maintaining the maximum pressure campaign", said Mnuchin. It also means, for example, that Iran's behavior - with its nuclear program or with hostile actions against other states in the region - do not need to be checked for Trump and Iran's leadership to come to the table.

Since pulling out of the nuclear deal, the USA has slapped waves of sanctions on Iran that have targeted its armed forces, financial sector and senior officials, including Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
