At 11 a.m. EDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Humberto was located near latitude 29.9 degrees north and longitude 76.5 degrees west making the center about 710 miles (1,145 km) west of Bermuda.

Humberto strengthened into a Category 2 storm early Tuesday, the NHC said. Such swells could pose life-threatening surf and rip current conditions to swimmers and surfers.

The storm is projected to become Hurricane Humberto on Sunday night with long-range forecasts putting Humberto within striking distance of Bermuda by late Wednesday night. The storm may bring a maximum of 6 inches of rainfall to the northwestern Bahamas, but it is not expected to bring significant storm surge, forecasters said.

In the Atlantic Tropical Storm Humberto is strengthening and getting better organized with winds up to 70 miles per hour.

"Interests in Bermuda should prepare for a close encounter with a hurricane that could evolve into a Category 3 before approaching nearby waters", AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. A majority of properties are made of stone and mortar.
