Trump to meet with India, Australia leaders in US next week

Howdy, Modi!' - the event to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Houston on 22 September is likely to see the largest-ever audience in the United States for any foreign leader other than the Pope. The White House has now officially confirmed President Donald Trump's participation at the 'Howdy Modi' event in Houston being organized by the Indian diaspora on September 22.

The rally with Modi indicates that the two countries have turned the page on an incident in July when Trump baffled India by saying, in a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, that Modi had sought mediation on Kashmir, a flashpoint for conflict between the nuclear-armed powers.

"The two leaders addressing the 'Howdy, Modi!' event is historic and unprecedented".

Calling the development "unconventional and unique", Indian Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla said, "It reflects not only closeness and comfort levels in the relationship but also personal chemistry and friendship between PM Modi & President Trump".

The White House said Trump will use the event to "emphasise the strong ties between the people of the United States and India" and reaffirm the two countries' strategic partnership.

The final confirmation on whether Trump would mark his attendance, in the event supported by Indian Americans to welcome PM Modi, is still awaited, NDTV reported on Sunday.

PM Modi is likely to leave for the USA on September 21 and will first travel to Houston and then to NY from September 23 to 27.
