China extends influence in Pacific as Solomon Islands break with Taiwan

Taiwan on Monday severed ties with the Solomon Islands after learning the Pacific nation had chose to switch diplomatic recognition to China, a decision it described as "extremely regrettable".

Self-ruled Taiwan has formal relations with only 16 countries worldwide, but China claims Taiwan as its territory and says it has no right to formal ties with any nation.

"The cabinet of the Solomon Islands government chose to switch diplomatic relations to the People's Republic of China", foreign minister Joseph Wu announced at a press conference in Taipei on Monday.

Wu accused China of luring away the Pacific ally before Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections with a clear attempt to sway the January polls.

The Solomon Islands is the sixth country to break off diplomatic ties with Taiwan during the Tsai administration. She has been criticised over her handling of Beijing.

Free resources help parents ensure children's safety
Last year in Texas, 62 children younger than 8 years old died in traffic crashes; 16 were unrestrained at the time of the crash. When installed correctly, vehicle seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% and by 54% for toddlers.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Taiwan's foreign office has told the Solomon Star newspaper that Mr Sogavare's comment did not reflect the complete picture.

The move came after the Solomon Islands' months-long review of the pros and cons of a switch to Beijing, which was offering $8.5 million in development funds to replace support from Taiwan.

Over the decades, dozens of countries, including the United States and most western nations, have switched recognition to Beijing, leaving just a handful of countries loyal to Taiwan, largely in Latin America and the Pacific.

Taiwan vowed to fight China's "increasingly out of control" behavior after El Salvador switched its allegiance to Beijing a year ago.

Taiwan's representative office in the Solomon Islands called the report a "fallacy" and said the taskforce members did not conduct proper fact-finding.
