Eight people were killed during the ambush and several Sri Lankan players were also injured.

Miandad -who played for Pakistan in Tests and ODIs between 1975 and 1996 - said Pakistani players need to be consistent in their performances. Some decided not to play purely based on 2009 incident.

The Sri Lankan team would be touring Pakistan for three ODIs and as many Twenty20s in September and October. Respecting their decision we picked players who were willing to travel.

Ten of Sri Lanka's top players, including Twenty20 captain Lasith Malinga and one-day global skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, have already pulled out of the limited-overs tour because of security concerns.

"Sri Lanka Cricket today sought the assistance of the Sri Lankan government to conduct a "reassessment" of the security situation in Pakistan ahead of the national team's planned tour to Pakistan", a board release said.

"Informed sports commentators told me that India threatened SL players that they will be ousted from IPL if they don't refuse Pak visit, this is really cheap tactic, jingoism from sports to space is something we must condemn, really cheap on the part of Indian sports authorities", Chaudhry tweeted on Tuesday.

Over the past three years, Pakistan has successfully hosted Zimbabwe, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, and a World XI for limited-overs matches amid intense security as it tries to win back confidence of foreign teams to restart fully fledged worldwide cricket at home.

According to reports, 10 Sri Lankan players, including T20 skipper Lasith Malinga, former captain Angelo Mathews, along with Dinesh Chandimal, Suranga Lakmal, Dimuth Karunaratne, Thisara Perera, Akila Dhananjaya, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kusal Perera and Niroshan Dickwella, have opted out of the tour. Dasun Shanaka and Shehan Jayasuriya are the two all-rounders who will look to provide balance to the Sri Lanka team.

Sri Lanka play a series of three ODI matches starting in Karachi on September 27 and a series of three T20I matches commencing in Lahore on October 5.

Though, the security situation in Pakistan is far from being completely normal even after the 2009 attack.
