Renee Zellweger recalls 'painful' moment she overheard strangers talking about her looks

Years after reports surfaced that Renée Zellweger surgically altered her face (which she vehemently denies), the actress recalled a moment where she encountered a real-life troll who went after her looks. The Rupert Goold directed film picks up 30 years after her breakout role, struggling to revive her career with a five-week sold-out residency in London.

"I tried not to think too much about the obvious, which is how adored Judy is and has been through generations, and how she's an icon for the ages", Renée told EW about playing Judy.

ET's Keltie Knight spoke with Zellweger at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival - where she's supporting her upcoming Judy Garland biopic, Judy - and the actress opened up about the hilariously freakish moment when pieces of her prosthetic nose apparently broke off on Wittrock's face. "She doesn't look like herself, and you can't just do that where you go and don't look like yourself, 'cause we expect you to look like yourself", Zellweger continued to explain.

'I thought, "Wow, that's interesting". "Anyway, here's my stop'".

CNN has reached out to Zellweger's representatives for comment.

'He said, "Oh God, you're not, you are!"

"All of our affection and admiration for Judy sort of felt very alive in that moment, and thinking of what that song meant to her at that time in her life, and the nostalgia we all sort of feel about it now", Zellweger added. "But you look just like yourself!' And I said, 'Yeah, it's amusing how that works, isn't it?'"

The former Bridget Jones actress said experiences such as this one were "momentarily... pretty painful". "I think otherwise I would have just run away".

"You know, I have dogs and they have to have shots and they need pills twice a day", she said.

Zellweger had previously made a very conscious decision to step out of the spotlight after an extended length of time being a prominent Hollywood fixture. "I have other things to do". According to Zellweger, she came up with it all by "just stealing, stealing, stealing".
