After a somewhat surprising vote by PGA Tour members, McIlroy also edged Koepka for PGA Tour Player of the Year honors on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old beat out competition from Brooks Koepka, Matt Kuchar and Xander Schauffele for the award, which comes just weeks after his victory in the season-ending PGA Tour Championship.

The victor was voted on by all PGA Tour members who played at least 15 official FedEx Cup events during the 2018-19 season.

A victor in 2016, McIlroy became the second player to win multiple FedExCups, following Tiger Woods, and the first player to win it along with The Players Championship in the same season.

The four-time major champion's other victory came in his RBC Canadian Open debut, where he set a tournament record and won by seven shots - the largest winning margin of the season. The Ulsterman's colleagues clearly took into account more than just their play at the four majors in 2019, which is how McIlroy ended with his third trophy. That year, Nick Faldo won PGA Player of the Year while Wayne Levi won PGA Tour Player of the Year.

"I couldn't be more proud of what I achieved this year", McIlroy, who had 14 top-10 finishes in his 19 starts, said on a conference call.

"I don't think I'll miss The Irish Open for two years in a row", he said.

That saw the Holywood native join Tiger Woods and Henrik Stenson as only the third player to win The Players, a major, the FedExCup and a World Golf Championships event. I feel like I'm a better player now than I was in 2014.

"Every year is different".

The tour does not release vote totals. Koepka also finished T-2 at the Masters, solo second at the U.S. Open and T-4 at the British Open.

Im, from South Korea, was the top Tour rookie in FedEx Cup points last season and was the only one to advance to East Lake.
