In the new structure of the European Commission Timmermans was chosen as one of the three executive Vice-Presidents with Margrethe Vestager (Denmark) and Valdis Dombrovskis (Latvia) and in a total eight vice-presidents, responsible for the top priorities in the European Commission's political guidelines.

Her "college" of commissioners will take office on November 1, assuming they secure approval from the European Parliament - not a given after it only narrowly backed the German in July.

Critics poured scorn on the incoming chief of the EU's executive on Tuesday after she named among her line-up of commissioners an official responsible for "Protecting our European Way of Life", branding it "grotesque" and "a far-right slogan".

"I will try to honour Italy and the government that proposed me, working in the interest of all European citizens".

He said on Tuesday that while Britain may want to wrap up a quick trade deal, it would take six to eight months before European Union member states could present him with a mandate to start those talks if a withdrawal agreement is struck this year.

"If a no deal is what Boris Johnson wants that is always something he can get, but as I see it the majority of MPs and the population do not want a hard Brexit".

As the Internal Market Commissioner, Sylvie Goulard will lead work on industrial policy and promote the digital single market.

Irishman Phil Hogan, now in charge of agriculture, will take up the post of trade commissioner, facing a battle to improve trade ties with the United States and establishing economic future relations with Britain after Brexit.

The former centre-left premier and former foreign minister is set to be the first Italian to hold this position.

The next step towards the confirmation of the commissioners will be hearings at the European Parliament.

The outgoing commission has long tussled with Italy over fiscal rules in past years.

Plans tabled by Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte include a demand to reform the European Union budget rules, a gambit that will face fierce pushback by Germany and the Netherlands that cherish balanced budgets across Europe.
