"Our country is on the brink of an economic crisis as we career towards a no-deal Brexit which will have an immediate effect on food and medical supplies, damage our economy, jobs, the public finances, public services, universities and long-term economic security".

A UK Government source told the paper that the scenarios are not worst-case - but are the "likely, basic and reasonable" results of failure to ratify a deal.

It comes as Boris Johnson will tell French and German leaders that there must be a new Brexit deal when he meets them next week.

Sinn Féin has accused the Government of being "reckless" on Brexit.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said her country is ready for Brexit, even without a deal to smooth the transition.

In his first trip overseas as leader, Johnson is due to meet his European counterparts ahead of a G7 summit on August 24-26 in Biarritz, France.

More than 100 MPs have urged the prime minister to immediately recall parliament from its over five-week summer recess and let it sit permanently until Brexit happens.

Some 67 per cent of Conservative voters and 65 per cent of Brexit Party voters are confident the United Kingdom will leave at the end of October, while 56 per cent of Labour voters and 63 per cent of Liberal Democrats are not confident.

He said if he won a vote of no-confidence in the government that he would delay Brexit, call a snap election and campaign for another referendum.
