Steve Smith leaving the ball in various postures during the 2nd Ashes Test Lord’s

England's Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler batted through a rain-shortened first session on the final day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Sunday after Australia's Steve Smith was ruled out with concussion.

This series is the first being played under the International Cricket Council's new concussion substitute regulations, part of the inaugural World Test Championship.

Australia finished at 6-154 when the match was called to a close.

Australia's Marnus Labuschagne acknowledges the crowd after getting 50 runs not out during play on day five of the 2nd Ashes Test cricket match against England at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Sunday.

Having passed the concussions tests on Saturday following a nasty blow to the neck off Archer, Smith was said to have woken up with a headache and a feeling of grogginess and subsequently showed signs of concussion in a follow-up assessment.

England resume 96-4 for a lead of 104, but it was the tussle between the Australian batsman and England pace man which dominated the sports headlines in this morning's papers.

Australia were 19-2 when Usman Khawaja was caught behind off a fine Archer ball just outside off stump for two.

Stokes slog-swept off-spinner Nathan Lyon for two sixes in as many deliveries on the way to a 160-ball century, his seventh in Tests and second against Australia.

Labuschagne responded well, though, battling through to tea and continuing to play with assurance even after Cameron Bancroft was trapped lbw by Jack Leach in the first over after the break to ramp up the pressure on Australia again.

It seemed any hope of an England win had disappeared when Jason Roy dropped a routine chance at second slip to reprieve Travis Head on 22.

Leach then had Matthew Wade (one) taken at short leg before Joe Denly held a sensational diving left-handed catch at midwicket to dismiss Tim Paine following the Australia captain's full-blooded pull off Archer.

Given the short turnaround, Smith could now miss the third Test in Leeds starting on Thursday.
