Bugatti finds 90s inspiration with striking Centodieci

Bugatti recently revealed they are releasing a powerful supercar that is worth $10 million.

This modern-day reinterpretation of the Bugatti EB110 made its official debut at Pebble Beach, with the French carmaker (yes, well all know the owner of the brand) choosing an all-white spec.

The Centodieci is powered by the same 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine as the Chiron, with power lifted slightly from 1103kW to a huge 1176kW at 7000rpm.

Unlike Bugatti's $18.7 million La Voiture Noire, which was built for grand touring, the Centodieci was built for speed.

On the outside, Centodieci, meaning the number 110 in Italian, takes cues from the EB110 supercar that was developed in the late 1980s and debuted in 1991.

The EB110 was developed under the mandate of Romano Artioli who had aspirations of bringing Bugatti back to its former glory after, for all intents and purposes, a almost four-decade hiatus.

I'm planning on spending some quality time examining the auto, as well as speaking with the designers and engineers responsible for the Centodieci at Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach this week, so stay tuned for more details and a video walkthrough.

With 20kg of unladen weight saved compared to the Chiron, the Centodieci sprints from standstill to 100km/h in just 2.4 seconds, to 200km/h in 6.1s and on to an electronically limited top speed to 380km/h. And while the Chiron tops out at 261 miles per hour, the Centodieci keeps pace with the Divo at 236 miles per hour, sharing the latter's emphasis on lateral acceleration.

It's about 44 pounds lighter than the Chiron. The car's windshield wipers and stabilizers both use the material, creating a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.5 pounds per horsepower.

"We are proud of our long Bugatti history, of which the EB110 is very much a part", Bugatti President Stephan Winkelmann said in a statement.

While the EB110 features squared-off headlights, the Centodieci features thin, narrow headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights that sit beside an aerodynamic line that runs through to the engine's air intakes on the car's flanks. Bugatti also designed all-new LED headlights to further evoke the Italian wedge shape of the previous auto.

Bugatti has also blacked out the A-pillar to help give the Centodieci a low-slung look, complemented by the black-and-white front splitter and side skirts, and large alloy wheels.

"The challenge was not to allow oneself to be captivated too much by the design of the historic vehicle and work exclusively in retrospect, but instead to create a modern interpretation of the shape and technology of that time", said Achim Anscheidt, head designer at Bugatti.

Let's start with the biggest potential hit on your wallet: the La Voiture Noire, which essentially means 'The Black Car.' Bugatti's only building one such example, taking an estimated 2.5 years or so to craft it by hand. It plans to build 10 Centodiecis, which will cost roughly $10 million after taxes. Both those features - the vent holes and raised rear wing - were drawn from the Bugatti EB110 SS, a very high performance version of that auto.
