Matt DiBenedetto did everything in his power to take a stunning victory away from Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, but Denny Hamlin was just too strong when it mattered.

When his sponsorship dried up early last season, Matt DiBenedetto took the unique step of making a social media video asking for funding ideas.

Hamlin virtually apologized to DiBenedetto in his first remarks after winning the race. I just had to give it 110 percent for FedEx and my whole team.

However, as he celebrated with a smoky burnout on the frontstretch, Hamlin's focus was as much on the driver who he had just beaten - and who announced going into the weekend he wouldn't be back with Leavine Family Racing in 2020 - as it was on the triumph he collected for his Joe Gibbs Racing team. Hamlin, on the other hand, had a roller-coaster race in which he started from the pole, damaged his No. 11 Toyota after contact with Jimmie Johnson's Chevrolet, lost a lap for an unscheduled pit stop on lap 189 for a loose wheel, regained the lead lap as the beneficiary under caution on Lap 248 and charged forward from 13th place after a Lap 260 restart to win the race. He needed redemption - and a win would have put him in the playoffs, no less - but he again wound up victim to the Gibbs juggernaut. The Bristol win would not have saved his job at Leavine, but if nothing else, it supported Hamlin's argument that a auto owner needs to hire DiBenedetto for next year.

"I wanted it to bad", DiBenedetto said. "I'm sad. Congrats to Denny, raced hard and I've been a fan of his since I was a kid". To be racing door-to-door with him at Bristol, in front of a great group of fans ... man. I am not done yet. It's going to happen.

Roughly 45 minutes later, DiBenedetto found Hamlin on the NBC Sports set and interrupted his interview. The two hugged, and Hamlin pulled DiBenedetto close and whispered into his ear for a long moment.

He remained apologetic for spoiling what would have been a defining moment for DiBenedetto, as well as Wheeler, Hamlin's former crew chief. "We're about to lose everything, so this is it, "' Hamlin said. Hamlin was in the middle of a live interview - some of it spent chiding auto owners for not giving DiBenedetto a job - when he put his microphone down and embraced the runner-up.

Pochettino: I don't know if Eriksen will stay at Tottenham
Despite that, no offers have come in for the 27-year-old and time is ticking until the Spanish and Italian transfer windows close. Legit.ng reported earlier that Tottenham have reportedly slammed £80 million price tag on Christian Eriksen .

Hamlin and DiBenedetto raced side by side for several laps before Hamlin completed the decisive late pass and sealed his fourth victory of the season. That surprising news comes at a time when DiBenedetto is racing better than ever. He initially offered the financial assistance to get Hamlin's team to the final race, but a twist of fate put Hamlin in the owner's vehicle and he wound up second.

"Between my spotter (Chris Lambert) and crew chief, they just stayed on me to make sure I didn't get anxious and just took my time", he noted. "I had plenty of time". I just worked him over, worked him over. I knew I didn't want to show him the bottom (lane) until I knew I could make the pass. "I ran the top, ran the top, ran the top, got the position on the bottom and then finished it".

"We had a great vehicle that could move around. Came back from a couple laps down, and here we are".

He then led the next 93 laps in succession, as a sizable crowd waited with bated breath to see if DiBenedetto could put the rocky events of the last week behind him by taking a statement victory.

Johnson has never missed the playoffs since the format began in 2004 but the seven-time champion dropped to 18th in points after a disappointing night at Bristol.

THE REST OF THE FIELD: Brad Keselowski finished third in a Ford, and was followed by Gibbs driver Kyle Busch, who came from 31st to finish fourth. He received thunderous boos during driver introductions, but the eight-time Bristol victor simply guzzled something from a red plastic cup and thanked the fans for coming. Chase Elliott came home fifth, with Kyle Larson sixth.

Bowyer and Suarez finished seventh and eighth, respectively, but the stage points made the difference. Kurt Busch and Ryan Blaney rounded out the top 10.
