His return to OH marks the first tournament Djokovic has played since his win at Wimbledon last month as he looks to build up momentum heading into the US Open in two weeks' time.

Medvedev maintained his first form with a comfortable 6-2 6-3 victory against Rublev.

"I was so exhausted in the first set and playing Novak, I thought I'm not going to be able to keep the intensity", Medvedev said in a courtside interview with ESPN.

"Then there was one momentum change in the second and I just started playing unbelievable".

David Goffin and Richard Gasquet also moved through to the final four of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

"Goffin is a tough guy, one of the fastest from the baseline, so I will be prepared to battle and to fight".

"I had some tightness, especially on my serve, and managed to finish the match which is great but the pain is there so hopefully I'll have no pain tomorrow", Djokovic said. A quick break saw Goffin surge to a 4-1 lead with a backhand victor down the line in the first set.

The Serb controlled the pace in the opening set with well-measured shots, sailing through his games and delivering a break in game six after an incredible defense that sent him 4-2 up, clinching the set with a hold at 15 in game nine when the Russian sprayed a forehand error.

Djokovic won his maiden title at the Cincinnati Masters previous year after defeating seven-time champion Federer in straight sets.

Goffin advanced when his quarter-final opponent, Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, pulled out before their match on Friday due to illness.

Goffin added that he was "lost" after the walkover.

"It was nearly a day off, so I was fresh and physically 100 percent today to play against Richard", the Belgian said. Do I have another practice session, go to the physio and have some treatment?

"I made a decision to go on the court for some practice and do what I normally do after".
