Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka reached his second quarter-final of the season on Thursday when he defeated Australia's Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-4 at the ATP Cincinnati Masters, powered by gorging on salmon and rice.

"I focus on one match, but the bottom half is a chance for everybody. I think he played good tennis, served well", Nishikori said.

"I came here with pride, being grateful to play against Nishikori", Nishioka said. It's good to see he's getting stronger, growing up.

De Minaur will face Yoshihito Nishioka in the round of 16 after the Japanese stunned compatriot and close friend Kei Nishikori 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

Osaka finally scored a win here at the US Open warm-up after losing in the first round a year ago.

World No. 1 Naomi Osaka battled to a three-set triumph.

The star will next face a third-round match against Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei, who defeated American Jennifer Brady 7-6 (11-9), 6-3. If I can, I want to take that (opportunity).

"I was just trying to have fun", Osaka said. "That's what I'm supposed to do".

Australia's Barty, 23, won the battle of former number one players in just over 90 minutes.

It was Barty's 40th victory of 2019 and she goes on to face Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, who beat Polish teenager Iga Swiatek 6-4, 7-6 (7/2).

The 28-year-old Belgian had his best ever result in a Masters event in Cincinnati last year, defeating both Kevin Anderson and Juan Martin del Potro en route to a semi-final with Roger Federer, which he was forced to abandon after the first set due to injury.

Nishioka continues to make his own personal history in Cincinnati, having already won five matches since he arrived in the city last week. My body's a little bit exhausted, but I can't say that. "Mentally, it was tough to return for me at the start after playing injured last week".
