Snap, the makers of Snapchat, is launching the third-generation of Spectacles, it's video-recording sunglasses.

Spectacles 3 are priced at $380 - 2.5 times the starting $150 price point of the current generation.

Spectacles 3, which will begin shipping in the fall, will cost $380, nearly twice the $200 cost of the previous version. The answer seems to be that Snap, which calls itself a "camera company", sees a strategic need to have a foothold in the content-capture business. The newly announced Spectacles 3 feature a sleeker and more stylish look than either of the two previous generation models, also up the ante with dual high definition cameras to "capture depth and dimension the way our eyes do", in three dimensions.

Notably, Snap's Spectacles 3 aren't water resistant like last year's model was. Note that in the third quarter of 2017, Snap took a write-off of almost $40 million related to Spectacles for unsold inventory and excess purchasing commitments. It's only a "limited edition" product, so Snap isn't investing a lot on it yet.

To record video, users tap either button (up to 60 seconds continuously) or press and hold for a photo.

The new Spectacles 3 are built using a lightweight steel frame with cameras mounted on either side of the frame and are offered in your choice of carbon (black) or mineral (a rose gold / beige) color schemes.

Snap isn't exactly forthcoming with specifications on its new glasses. After uploading the content to the messaging app Snapchat, users can add new lighting, landscapes and three-dimensional effects to the images, Snap said.

Like Apple's popular AirPods, the Spectacles 3 will feature a high-tech carrying case that can recharge the glasses' batteries while they are stored, and stores up to four full charges.
