The company will open 6,500-square-foot stores at malls in Houston and Paramus, New Jersey, in a joint venture with retailer b8ta Inc.

While only the two stores will be opened for the 2019 holiday season, it is being viewed as a format test before "rolling out substantially more stores in 2020 that will be larger and closer to 10,000 square feet".

A slow rollout is planned, with scattered stores opening across the USA, but if you're tempted to fly out to visit one, instead just head north to Canada, where there's still loads of Toys "R" Us stores all over the country.

"As a kid, my memory of Toys R Us was running up and down the aisles kicking balls and playing with the coolest toys", said Phillip Raub, co-founder and president of b8ta and interim co-CEO of the Toys R Us joint venture, in a statement.

Come holiday season, Toys R Us will emerge from the dead as Tru Kids with two USA stores. He says his factors, which make cash advances to suppliers based on the goods they sell to the merchant, also wouldn't approve it.

"We've teamed up with Tru Kids Brands to re-imagine Toys R Us and launch two new immersive locations in Texas and New Jersey", the company tweeted Thursday morning.

In recent years, though, it had fallen into disarray and had billions in debt, much of it from a 2005 leveraged buyout. "As the retail landscape changes, so do consumer shopping habits".

"Toys R Us, which had basically devolved into a warehouse, did not have the vision or the money to give its customers a great experience", Howard Davidowitz, a retail consultant who worked with Toys R Us in the 1980s and 1990s, told The Washington Post in 2017. But not as the giant warehouse stores everybody remembers with toys stacked to the ceiling.

Unlike the rows of shelves that cluttered old Toys "R" Us stores, the new locations will have interactive and playground-like environments for toy brands. B8ta and Tru Kids Brands efforts will create stores that are something akin to the most profitable small store locations in the world: Apple Stores and Microsoft Stores. After all, Toys R Us had annual sales of $11.5 billion when it filed for bankruptcy.

Overall, Toys "R" Us aims to open 10 stores around the 2020, with the goal of opening another flagship in NY or California. The return comes more than a year after the chain collapsed, resulting in the closure of all 700 of its American stores.
