Landing on the Moon is the first piece of content to feature on the app, produced in partnership with the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and sponsored by Jimmy Dean.

Knoll's involvement in the project was key to achieving scientific accuracy; ILM's chief creative is a known moon buff who began researching the Apollo 11 mission soon after its 30th anniversary, when he found a website with raw telemetry data from the moon landing.

The mission has also been honoured through a Google Doodle on Friday.

The 2018 film portrays the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon. The book was one of several lots at the Christie's auction in NY, titled One Giant Leap: Celebrating Space Exploration 50 Years After Apollo 11. Apollo 11 had a very big team of 400,000 working on it.

The first was that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had lost radio contact with Earth, after the onboard computer showed unfamiliar error codes.

Recalling Armstrong's famous words "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", the 89-year-old said, "I think a number of us are still waiting for that giant leap". With the short video, the search engine celebrates the 50th anniversary of the historic moon landing.

Mr Collins said that when he saw the USA flag planted on the Moon, he was thrilled and it made him proud to be an American, but a diplomatic world tour he and the other two astronauts took after the mission "opened my vistas". Returning safely to Earth on July 25, 1969, the Apollo 11 crew were followed by 10 more astronauts, with the final mission taking place in 1972.
