The centre-back wants to leave Arsenal after spending nine years at the club and has requested to leave on a free transfer, despite having a year left on his contract.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery insists the club is targeting major players in the transfer window.

During the first few months, the North London club had been cruising in the Premier League and everyone was sure that they would get back into the Champions League with considerable ease.

Emery had labelled him an "important player" earlier this week but has now openly admitted Koscielny could leave. Granit Xhaka - the leading contender to replace Koscielny who Emery appeared to confirm looks set to be stripped of the captaincy at least after going on strike - and Mesut Ozil remain while Nacho Monreal will also be promoted to Emery's group for the new season.

Arsene Wenger was moved on after seeing his faultless qualification record ended, while Unai Emery was unable to buck the trend in his debut campaign at Emirates Stadium. At least one of the two remaining places will be filled by an Englishman, raising the prospect of the likes of Rob Holding, Calum Chambers or Ainsley Maitland-Niles being earmarked for extra responsibility this season.

Emery has already seen that group dismantled.

The undeterred Gunners boss, though, will construct another leadership group ahead of the new season.

We have to work well together on the pitch, out of the pitch and we have to work together, all of the players.

"We are taking with the patience and with the calm because we really want to sign players who can help us with a big performance and also because we think in the team we have very good players and young players and we also need to take the best player in some positions". 'If the club and the coach give me the armband, I will be happy of course.
