During his time there he helped Chevrolet chief engineer Ed Cole turn his proposed Small Block V-8 into a viable technology for the Corvette later that decade.

The eighth-generation Corvette also puts the driver about a foot closer to the nose, and Chevrolet said its 6.2-liter V-8 can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds. The vehicle ceased production this summer. This is the mid-engine Corvette long prophesied in buff books of yore.

Speaking of the auto, while it will be the first production Corvette with its engine behind the driver and passenger compartment, and will offer world-class supercar performance, General Motors president Mark Reuss promised the 2020 Stingray will have a base price of less than $60,000.

"He was shocked. He didn't think I'd be able to drive it like I did", he said.

He never forgot those mid-engine European racers, though, so in his position as Corvette chief engineer he pursued the midship layout through various concepts, like the CERV I created in 1960.

Whether the Corvette can generate enough excitement to attract even the loyal buyers of the pricier European brands from Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren and Lotus - remains to be seen.

Nearly mythic in the American imagination, the auto has been immortalised in television and film from "Route 66" and "Hot Rods to Hell" in the 1960s to "Corvette Summer" in 1978.

Ahead of the evening launch inside a vast hangar, Corvette owners planned to mingle at a "Corvette Corral". One enthusiast set to attend, John Elegant, 72, said he has been waiting since his teenage years for a mid-engine Corvette. In fact, I can nearly hear Hennessey announcing its multi-step C8 program, with a four-digit climax, of course.

The co-founder of and current owner of a canary yellow C7, Elegant purchased his first Corvette in 1998 after putting his daughters through college.

Is this little red Corvette the ultimate mainstream sports vehicle?

"There are other brands that make really good muscle cars, like Mustang, but a Mustang is not a sports vehicle".
