As two industry heavyweights, Microsoft and AT&T's partnership will ripple across the telecom industry by benefiting both companies' customer bases and vendor partners.

Microsoft on Thursday posted quarterly earnings that trounced expectations, citing growth in partnerships with companies on technology and cloud computing services.

One of the joys of Gamescom is that it goes out of its way to accommodate the general public, and Microsoft announced that, at the show, it will lay on a program for Xbox fans called Xbox Open Doors: "Held at the Gloria Theatre on Wednesday, August 21 to Friday, August 23, Xbox Open Doors offers fans a multi-day experience during the week of Gamescom".

At Mobile World Congress earlier this year, AT&T announced a pilot of network edge compute (NEC) capabilities on its 5G network with Microsoft Azure.

"By working together on common efforts around 5G, the cloud, and AI, we will accelerate the speed of innovation and impact for our customers and our communities", said John Donovan, CEO of AT&T Communications, in a statement. IBM also will be helping manage AT&T's hybrid cloud infrastructure, and AT&T Business is making IBM the primary provider of software-defined networking for the company.

Microsoft has provided details of its presence at the upcoming Gamescom 2019 show, which will take place in Cologne between 20 and 24 August. Past year around this time, console sales got a bump thanks in part to the Fortnite craze.

Microsoft has recently expanded its subscription revenue category through Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

The new Xbox was promised to be released in time for the Christmas holiday shopping season in 2020.

Following a very busy E3 in June, the Xbox team will come back to Cologne, Germany for gamescom 2019 next month.

Revenue from productivity and business processes division that includes business and consumer cloud services as well as career-focused social network LinkedIn was up 14 percent to $11 billion, according to the earnings report.

AT&T will also move many of its employees over to the Microsoft 365 office suite, giving access to tools such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and more.
