With a Heat Watch in effect across Northeast Ohio through Saturday night, there are several tips and precautions that residents should take to stay safe as temperatures rise. The heat index will be just five degrees lower than the excessive heat warning area.

In New York City on Wednesday and Thursday, heat indices are forecast to be in the 90s, with "peak heat is expected into the weekend, with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and heat indices close to 105 degrees on Friday and close to 107 degrees on Saturday", according to a statement from the city's Department of Emergency Management.

As WSPY has been reporting this week, potentially unsafe heat is in the forecast.

Temperatures this afternoon have already warmed into the low 90s across many spots and heat index values are now in the 100s.

An Excessive Heat Watch is issued when prolonged periods of hot weather are expected.

The NWS advises that impacts on people and pets could include "heat stroke, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses, especially if you spend a significant amount of time outdoors, or are involved in any strenuous outdoor activity". Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. It is imperative to stay hydrated and find air conditioning through the weekend.

From life-threatening heat strokes to unsightly heat hives, Fox News' Dr. Manny Alvarez sits down with an internal medicine specialist to breakdown the top ways extreme heat can affect the body.

Additionally, an excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday for the following counties in our area.

Wednesday, a high of 90 is anticipated with hot and humid temperatures.

"Plan to spend more time in air conditioned or well-ventilated places", the NWS advises. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
