The start of the 2019 college football season is still more than a month away, however, the silly season continues this week as MI football and the rest of the Big Ten head to Chicago for the annual Big Ten Media Days. Northwestern, with one first place vote, was fourth and Purdue was fifth. Michigan State was third, followed by Penn State, Indiana, Maryland and Rutgers in the poll, which was announced Wednesday. The Huskers and Hawkeyes each got 14 first place votes, but Nebraska got 198 overall points to Iowa's 194.5. Minnesota, which also got a first place vote, was sixth and IL was a unanimous choice for seventh. Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor was predicted to be the offensive Player of the Year.

The annual gathering of coaches, players and the media will begin Thursday and just prior to it, the Big Ten Media voted on their preseason picks. This is the ninth year a group of writers has offered its predictions.

Michigan State is loaded with returning talent on defense and that was recognized by the media.

With two selections, Michigan State tied Ohio State for the most in the conference.

The Spartans' offense was a disaster at the end of last season en route to a 7-6 record. Ohio State has been picked to win the Big Ten the previous four years and five of the last six years. In the West Division, the media picked Nebraska to edge out Iowa for the division title.
