The show was headlined by a star-making central turn from Blake Lively, and featured a collection of other teen heartthrobs including Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick and Taylor Momsen.

Finally, after several online rumors and countless requests for a reboot from diehard fans on social media, the hit drama series that aired on The CW from 2007-2012 is coming back. Variety reported on Wednesday a spinoff of The CW's Gossip Girl had been set at the yet-to-be-launched streaming service from WarnerMedia.

Set eight years after the original website went dark, the spinoff will reportedly follow a new generation of NY private school teens as they are introduced for the first time to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. It's unclear if any of the original cast will be returning.

However, rather than picking up with the original characters, such as Blair, Serena, and Dan, the show is being developed as a sequel-style reboot which will feature an all-new set of NY private schoolers. Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo of Alloy Entertainment will serve as executive producers, with Lis Rowinski of Fake Empire as co-executive producer. "None of us are interested in just redoing a story".

Safran told The Hollywood Reporter that he, Schwartz, and Savage had been toying with the idea for a while. And don't worry - the future of Gossip Girl lies in good hands.

"Then the stars aligned and we had availability to jump, and Warners, obviously, it's something they're very passionate about", he explained. He also noted that the new show would examine social media's effects on society.
