Aston Villa have made their eighth signing of the summer, bringing in Bjorn Engels from Reims and taking their spending to nearly £100m.

The Belgian has joined for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £7 million and is Dean Smith's eighth summer signing.

That didn't go down well at Club Brugge, who pulled the plug, and the deal is now reported as "completely gone", at least for the time being.

Smith said: "Bjorn is a player that I've been watching for the past 18 months".

Villa have already signed striker Wesley, for a club-record £22m from Club Brugge, left-back Matt Targett for £11.5m from Southampton and defender Kortney Hause for £3m from Wolves.

Engels has joined Villa's pre-season training camp in the US, with Smith's team set to face Minnesota United in the early hours of Thursday morning. "Kalvin is very much part of our team, he is very much part of our plan", Kinnear said.

Villa had narrowly missed out on a return to the Premier League at the end of the 2017-18 season after losing 1-0 to Fulham in the playoff final, following which their financial troubles came to light.

In an era where supporters are desperate for transfer news as soon as it happens or clues so they can be ahead of the game, this kind of thing can be pored over. I like the style the manager wants to play and I think I will fit in.
