With Chelsea unable to add new players to their squad following a Federation Internationale de Football Association ban, Lampard has been tasked with improving the players he inherited from predecessor Mauricio Sarri and promoting young players from the club's academy.

"I think everyone knows I have a keen eye for the academy players the club have produced", he added.

'I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year so I'm a big fan, but with the minutes he played last year, in the interest of Ethan and of Chelsea, the idea he can play a lot of games somewhere could be good for him. I have my own way that I want to work with the players, and I have to say in one week that we have been training I have been very happy with the attitude and the quality of the players.

The centre-back, 18, has not joined the Premier League club's pre-season tour of Japan in anticipation of a move.

"With the amount of games he's played in the last few seasons it is important to be cautious, and with the type of player that he is, a very energetic and a fit lad, meant that pushing him at the start of pre-season was not necessary". We can't bring any players in this year, we know that, but I don't need new players.

The Blues have already tied fellow home-grown stars Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount to fresh terms, with the two highly-rated midfielders penning five-year deals.

"I'm really looking forward to the coming season now and working hard to have an impact here at Chelsea".

"I'm very happy with the squad and determined for us to be successful".

Lampard said it was a "blessing in disguise" that the club would not be involved in the transfer window and that he was excited by the young talent at his disposal. He also revealed he is willing to give young players a chance at the club, but they will have to show they can make the difference. Ruben has just signed which is great and I want Callum to sign and stay here. "We have a batch of them fighting to get into the first team".

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Ampadu, who has played 12 times for Chelsea's first team.
