Croatian police said the fire took hold close to the venue early on Tuesday, but that the fire was under control and no-one had been injured.

The Fresh Island Festival is a three-day hip-hop event on the Croatian island of Pag.

As concertgoers attempted to leave, some were stranded by road closures from the blaze in the nearby town of Novalja, the BBC reported. Festival organizers shared a statement on Facebook last night during the chaos, explaining that performances had been paused "under instruction from the police and fire service as a safety precaution".

Some buses were later escorted through by police.

Video posted to social media shows revellers leaving the festival site as the forest fire blazed in the background.
