The GSA says experts are working to restore the situation as soon as possible.

Depending on the sat-nav chip they have installed, cell phones and other devices might also be making connections with the Russian (Glonass) and Chinese (Beidou) networks.

A later notification [pdf] warns users of "a technical incident in the Galileo ground infrastructure" that "is affecting the functioning of the Galileo system, as a result of which there is a temporary interruption of some of the Galileo initial services".

The outage won't make your navigation chores any less accurate, but it's worrying that a relatively new, technically sophisticated system can go down for so long.

The Galileo global navigation satellite system remains inoperational, with system administrators issuing an advisory notice to all users saying that "until further notice, users experience a service outage".

Europe's positioning satellites, Galileo, have been out of action since July 11 for mysterious reasons.

Galileo is now only in the testing phase, and has only recently been approved for U.S. smartphones by the FCC. Hopefully, the European Union can fix it and work out the bugs before it does go into full operation.

That's not very clear, but one source told specialist sat-nav publication Inside GNSS that it's to do with the Precise Timing Facility (PTF) in Italy.

The EU's Galileo satellites have been suffering from technical problems.

There are now 22 operational satellites in orbit (another two are in space but in testing), with a further 12 under construction with industry.

An outage across the entire Galileo network is therefore a matter of significant concern and no small embarrassment to the trading bloc.
