Google’s taking another crack at building a social network

Google finally chose to shut Google+ down, publicly accepting that their foray into the world of social media was not entirely successful, but it seems like the internet juggernaut will soon be taking another calculated stab at developing a social network with its new project titled "Shoelace". The app is now in an invite-only testing stage for Android and iOS in New York City and there is no solid word on the app going public.

Once users have listed their interests, it will recommend some hand-picked local activities, which it calls "Loops".

The aim behind coming up with this innovative social networking app is to let people find like-minded people around with whom they can meet and share things between each other. Users will also be able to create a listing for an event of activity that they are participating.

We wonder whether this will go beyond the experiment stage and roll out to other countries, so we have to keep our hopes low on this one. It will also suggest events that you might be interested in joining.

Currently, the app has launched an invite approach testing phase in New York City and selected areas.

American technology giant Google has not found much luck in building a social network. It can be accessed only by invitations and the people living in New York City for the time being.

One striking similarity found by Android Police is that Shoelace is mostly same as Schemer which was launched back in 2011 by Google.

And even if Shoelace doesn't make it in the long run, I wouldn't be surprised to see many of its features and ideas incorporated into Google Maps or another Google service in the future. As for the app making its way to other countries including India, we would advise you not to hold your breath. And this name might sound weird but it just an invite-only app which has been developed by Google's in-house incubator named Area 120.
