In the mood for some good news on the David Ortiz front?

Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, announced the latest surgery in a statement released Thursday by the Red Sox.

A gunman shot Ortiz in the lower back on June 9 while he was sitting on a crowded bar patio in Santo Domingo. Ortiz suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was treated in a Dominican Republic hospital and, within a couple of days, was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he remains.

Authorities have said that they do not believe he was the intended target of the shooting, but was mistaken for another man. From there, the Boston Red Sox legend was flown out to Massachusettes where he received a second surgery as a precaution.

"We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this hard time", Ortiz's wife said. Ortiz's condition was upgraded to good on June 18, but he has remained hospitalized in the weeks since. He was a 10-time All-Star and led the Red Sox to three World Series champions in his 14 seasons in Boston. Ortiz finished his career with 541 home runs.
