He then opened the batting in place of the injured Jason Roy and glided to an effortless century off 93 balls to become the first England player to register three World Cup tons.

But in an interview with the BBC, Morgan expressed reservations.

The hosts are struggling with fitness issues, the latest being captain Eoin Morgan having to leave the field with a back spasm during the game against the West Indies.

Roy, who suffered the injury while fielding during England's win over the West Indies on Friday, has been ruled out of Tuesday's group fixture against Afghanistan at Old Trafford and Friday's match against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

When Hales was dropped from the World Cup squad after serving a 21-day suspension, Morgan said it was because of "complete breakdown in trust" between the batsman and the rest of the squad.

Morgan added: "It's not a conversation that we have had with Ed Smith or [coach] Trevor Bayliss".

"It's not something that we've talked about -- we've not talked about replacing any player and that's a real positive within itself".

Roy pulled up his hamstring after chasing the ball over the covers during the eighth over of the match. "It is a matter of 24-48 hours before it settles down, sometimes it gets healed a lot quicker and sometimes it lingers around". "You pride yourself on as a batter for converting those starts into hundreds", said Root who was adjudged the Player of the Match.

"He might be back against Australia or maybe for the following game. We've got some quite similar views so I think it would be very similar".

Morgan, speaking at a pre-match press conference on Monday, said he meant to play against Afghanistan after coming through an indoor net session at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, 32-year-old Morgan suffered from a back spasm during the 40th over and had to be helped from the field.

As for Morgan's condition, the European Central Bank said he had undergone a scan at the weekend and received further treatment.

James Vince is expected to replace the England opener in the side.

In case Morgan isn't fully fit, vice captain Jos Buttler is likely to lead the team which boasts of a strong bench strength that includes the likes of Tom Curran and Moeen Ali.

England are fourth in the table with six points from four matches and will be overwhelming favourites against bottom- placed Afghanistan who have lost all four games.

The double setback is a blow to England after their most convincing victory of the World Cup to date.
