Two Italians accused of posing as United States actor George Clooney to promote a fashion business have been arrested in Thailand after years on the run.

Crime Suppression Division (CSD) commander Jiraphob Puridet said on Sunday Francesco Galdeli, 58, and Vanja Goffi, 45, were detained at a house in Bang Lamung district near Pattaya city on Saturday under arrest warrants issued by Interpol.

George Clooney had testified that the couple had used his name fraudulently to promote a fashion label.

Their crimes led them to be dubbed the Italian "Bonnie and Clyde" after the notorious American bank robbers of the Great Depression era.

The fugitives are also wanted in Italy for a slew of scams, including selling fake Rolex watches online - and sending packets of salt to customers instead of the timepieces, the statement said.

Thai police said they have arrested an Italian man wanted in his home country after he fled a jail sentence handed down for fraudulently using the name of actor George Clooney to lure people into investing in a bogus clothing company. There was drone footage of the pair carrying a bag as they were taken into custody from their compound in the Thai town in Pattaya.

Italy's worldwide police and the Crime Suppression Division of the Royal Thai Police finally succeeded in arresting the two on Sunday, after tailing them.

They will be charged with overstaying their visas in Thailand before extradition proceedings begin.
