- When is the Copa America?

Australia won four out of six editions of the OFC Nations Cup before leaving the Oceania federation and joining the Asian Football Confederation in 2006.

The head of South America's football confederation confirmed on Thursday Australia will take part in the tournament along with fellow Asian confederation member Qatar as guest nations.

The 2020 tournament will be held jointly in Colombia and Argentina and will feature the 10 South American nations as well as the two guests.

The other group will feature Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile and the other invited nation. The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage.

The 2019 Copa America, which kicks off in Brazil on Friday, includes guests Japan and Qatar and Australia will follow suit for the first time in 12 months.

Although the tournament invitees are now known for next year's Copa America, the final venue is still a mystery.

"We crave these opportunities as players and coaches. The experience we will gain from playing in this tournament will be incredible and I know by speaking to our players, they are equally excited", Arnold said.

"Our planning for the [2022] World Cup [in] Qatar has already started". Playing in this tournament provides another layer of incentive for our players to put themselves up for selection for the national team.

Why are Asian teams playing in the South American championships?

"We have chose to invite ... to participate in our competitions the current Asian confederation champions and the previous ones", said Alejandro Dominguez, the president of South American football's governing body.

The scheduling of this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup at the same time as the Copa America meant that CONMEBOL was forced to cast its net further afield.

Mexico has reached the final in 1993 and 2001 - losing on both occasions - with the U.S. and Honduras also making the semi-finals in their guest appearances.

The Socceroos then won the AFC Asian Cup in 2015 at only their third attempt.

The Copa America is the oldest global continental football competition, first taking place in 1916.
