Raonic is playing for the first time since suffering a right knee injury in late March.

Fellow Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, meanwhile, suffered a second round exit at the hands of Milos Raonic, losing a gruelling game 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (1/7). Raonic, who lost last year's final to Roger Federer, hit 24 aces to beat Tsonga in 2 hours, 27 minutes.

Second-seeded Croatian Borna Coric battled back from early struggles for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over American Taylor Fritz in the Round of 16 in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.

Coric was broken in the final game of the first set, but he asserted control from there, converting all three of his break points and staving off the only two he faced.

Fernando Verdasco was another seed who was second best, Adrian Mannarino rallying from a set down to win 1-6 6-3 6-4 and advance along with David Goffin and Cristian Garin. There were no break chances in set number two to set up a tie break that was decided by a forehand error from Raonic at 4-5, allowing Jo-Wilfried to wrap up the set with an ace in the 12th point and send the encounter into a decider.

Fourth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili also felt to defeat, losing 6-7 (4) 6-2 7-5 to Hungary's Marton Fucsovics. Raonic next faces Marton Fucsovics of Hungary. In the day's other match, Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff cruised past Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-2, 6-2.

Struff converted four out of eight break points, two in each set that pushed him over the finish line and into the third quarter-final in 2019.
